AstraZeneca's Nexium (Esomeprazole) has lost patent protection for a dose of the drug.

Nexium was launched in Europe in September 2019 and is now awaiting final approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its equivalent of the drug in the United Kingdom.

Nexium is used to treat frequent heartburn (occurs 1 or more days a week), acid reflux (occurs 1 or more days a week), and other stomach problems.

The drug has been on the market in 20 years, and it was originally patented in 2001 for acid reflux medication. The drug is known as Zantac, which is one of the most popular branded versions in Europe.
