“We believe that if there was an alternative to Nexium for patients who are on Prevacid for heartburn, we would be the only one who would be able to use the cheaper drug,” Swerter said in a statement. “This would be a huge improvement for our patients who are taking a similar acid-suppressing drug, omeprazole. We would also be the only one who would be able to continue to be able to continue to be able to use Prevacid, omeprazole, and our other other drugs.”
The price increases were part of a broader review of the drugs industry’s drug sales and pricing strategies, Swerter said, adding that the prices would be lower than previous years, “particularly as the drug prices went up,” but that there were still “many opportunities” for the company to increase its earnings in April. Teva Pharmaceuticals, the owner of Nexium, agreed to sell its rights to Prevacid in the United States in April, and will sell the rights to Zetia in the United States in June. (Pfizer has agreed to pay $6 billion in damages and settlements for its patent infringement and other damages.)
Nexium is still the company’s top seller in the United States, but it is the only one to have sold a generic version of the drug, and Pfizer said it would not make any announcement until then.
AstraZeneca said it will continue to manufacture and sell the drug, but it will not be taking the drug to a major pharmaceutical company. Healy, a gastroenterologist at Johns Hopkins, said he expects the drug to be safe for patients to take. "As long as there's an effective treatment, there's no reason to switch to Nexium for other types of heartburn," he said.
The Food and Drug Administration has not approved Nexium for long-term use, but patients are encouraged to consult their doctors if they are concerned about its safety.
Healy, a gastroenterologist at Johns Hopkins, told The Canadian Medical Journal he expects Nexium to be a top choice for patients.
"I think if patients are going to be aware of the risks, they may be willing to try it," he said. "So if they don't see an opportunity, it's not going to be a big issue."
